Day 8: 29th Malaspina Regata

And they're off. Too bad so many are in front of us. That's no good!

Today is the 29th Annual Malaspina Regatta. After all forecasts predicted it would be more of a 'float' than a 'sail' the winds were high and all hands needed on deck for one of the fastest races yet - just over 2 hours.

We managed the triangle course with one gybe and one 'turn' where we just went from a broad reach to a close haul. That is not even a tack.

Leg 1: Lost our wind on the start line and watched the field leave without us.
Leg 2: Downwind. No wing on wing as we were not perfectly ahead of the wind. No ground lost.
Leg 3: The secret to our success was the ability to point high to avoid the headlands. We took this leg in one shot with no tacks - marker to finish line. Here we managed to make up about 8-10 positions. Any boat that needed to tack back out into the straight was at a distinct disadvantage.

Cousin Mark and his family in a borrowed boat trying to hoist the spinnaker.

Approaching the finish line.

Taryn and Seth investigating turtle log. 7 turtles to report.

More poker.

Roger, Mark and Jeff.

Be very careful which bag you slip your hand into. You may be treated to Ruffles chips or a tasty Lamb Lung Fillet.

The post-race BBQ is hosted by the Pender Harbour Legend. What a lovely night.

Reliving the race!

Zoro S. is presented with the Garden Bay Sailing club's annual award in recognition of long-time service to the Pender Harbour sailing community.

Day 7: Hotel Lake all as it should be

Today is Mom and Dad's 55th Anniversary. We will celebrate on Sunday, July 1st with a potluck supper at the lake when the Malaspina boat race and bbq is behind us.

Seth and Taryn arrived this morning as did Jeff. Slowly our camp is filling up.
When the Kennedy family arrives this evening, we will be complete.

We need to be smarter than the raccoons.

Morning rain.

Seth and Taryn arrive in the rain on Seth's motorbike. They go to Grandma's to warm up.

Time for tea and a book.

The turtle population is healthy.

We have all sorts of accommodation!

Sundew on a floating log.

The sun comes out just enough to entice Seth and Shaelyn to go for a swim. Mark is sailing in the back ground. And, our once a year camp friend Emma is out in the kayak.

Life is good when there are Wagon Wheels to nibble on.

Mark fine tunes his light wind techniques.

This is how we roll.

The poker parlour is open with Alex and Dominic. They are patiently waiting for Ashton. This is their first appearance at the camp.

Potato Salad!

Still life - Hotel Lake style.

Good eats are happening at Marianne's site.

We all chat while Brian backs the trailer into place.

More 'setting up'.

Hmm, is this safe?!

We wrap Mom up like a burrito to keep her warm.

The final player has arrived and the poker game moves into the tent.
