In Search of Some Big Cacti Before Game #6 Cleveland Indians vs Arizona Diamondbacks

Phoenix Sonoran Desert Preserve - Desert Vista Trailhead

This morning I had to pay the piper and spend a few hours buckling down and getting some real work done. Alex did not mind extending his sleep. We set off in the heat of the early afternoon to find some of the parks north of Phoenix that we visited three years ago.

An excellent choice is the Cave Creek Regional Park. Last time, we thoroughly enjoyed the visitor centre and a few hiking trails. There is a $6.00/vehicle fee to enter this park which is well worth it if you intend on spending some time here.  Since we really only wanted a quick picture beside a Saguaro cactus, those big cacti with all of the arms, we made a polite Canadian U-turn by the fee gate and pulled off the road around the corner and took our pictures. I know, how rude!?

Closer to our RV park is the Phoenix Sonoran Preserve which boasts a number of trailheads. Of course, I was totally confused as to which one we had been to before. This time we were stopped at the Desert Vista Trailhead.  A better starting point, in my opinion, is at the Apache Wash Trailhead. This area has a larger parking lot and greater variety of flat and hilly hiking options. But, since this was a 'take a picture with a cactus'-only expedition - we considered it a success. The Apache Wash Trailhead access is a perfect place for biking with gently rolling terrain that most knobby-tired bikes with gears will handle with ease.

On the access road just before the fee gate at the Cave Creek Regional Park.

Since we were on a cacti-finding, not hiking, mission, we set our timer for 10 minutes. We will hike 10 minutes in and 10 minutes out. It was 30 degrees Celcius at 2 pm not the time for an extended hike.

We have been here for 4 days and have yet to get into the pool.  Alex opted to stay in the trailer but I hung out for an hour before our evening baseball game.

Oh dear, things at home look nasty!

One neighbour a few trailers down has a lovely chicken gracing their front hitch area.

It is time to change up my baseball game salad options. Chickpea Salad with a cut up homemade burger topped with some feta and a side of sliced mango. Yum!

We typically enter through the side gate but today I made a point of entering through the front. They even had a live Jazz Big Band playing to welcome you to the park.

This Mama knows how to pick good seats! Too bad we can't choose our neighbours. The row behind us had six friends with VERY loud voices. They yelled to talk with each other throughout the game, without ceasing. I mean that - with.out.ceasing. I appreciate the five good games all the more.
